Burn Before Reading: A Carly Allen Story

Quote of the Day: 07.04.17

So, it's the Fourth of July which means we get to talk about America. I think James Baldwin said it best:

I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.

Also, if you haven't read Langston Hughes' poem, I, Too, definitely, definitely read it. And that's high praises coming from someone who doesn't dig poetry.

The quote today comes from Joe Purdy. He's a dude that plays a lot of sad music on an acoustic guitar with a harmonica. Which, as you all know, is my favorite type of music. I'm going to leave you with a collection of some of my favorite songs about America. Spoiler: it's mostly just Bruce Springsteen and Joe Purdy.

  1. Born in the U.S.A - Bruce Springsteen
  2. Children of Privilege - Joe Purdy
  3. New Year's Eve - Joe Purdy
  4. Cairo Walls - Joe Purdy
  5. This Land is Your Land - Bruce Springsteen (Yeah, not Woody Guthrie. Bruce covered it on his live album.)
  6. American Girl - Tom Petty
  7. Girls in Their Summer Clothes - Bruce Springsteen
  8. American Land - Bruce Springsteen
  9. American Pie - Don McLean
  10. America - Simon & Garfunkel
  11. Kids in America - Kim Wilde
  12. American Idiot - Green Day

Just looking at this playlist I'm very overwhelmed by how much I clearly love Dad Rock.
