Burn Before Reading: A Carly Allen Story

Throwback to a Simpler Time (Plus, the Playlist to End All Playlists)

format Recently, I've been on this very big early 2000s alternative Warped Tour glory days era of music kick. I'm sure my mother just read that sentence and was like, I understand what all these words mean separately, but they make ZERO sense as a coherent sentence. The quote of the day is from The Format's The First Single (You Know Me).

Listening to alternative music was my first foray into listening to music that didn't derive from the Disney Channel. I did not listen to cool music when I was young. (Although, I am still ducking jamming to Stevie Brock's All For Love. Stevie, who are you?? What are you doing with your life now?? Why isn't this song at karaoke establishments??) Middle school was when I first started branching out.

I think I hit the perfect sweet spot of youthful teenage angst and the rise of bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco. Sugar We're Going Down is still so, so good. I remember hearing it when I was a wee lil nugget and thinking it was so scandalous. I mean the second verse goes, "Oh, don't mind me, I'm watching you two from the closet wishing to be the friction in your jeans."

WELL SHUT MY MOUTH AND CLUTCH MY PEARLS HOW TAUDRY.

Despite my newfound appreciation for these punk bands, I was still born and raised in a pop music household, so I wasn't giving up that easily. Here is a mess of a playlist demonstrating the conflicting human that I used to be still am. For every angsty alternative song, I'm gonna give you a bubblegum nonsense pop song from the same era. This is the most niche playlist I've ever made.
